July 2007

In times like these, it helps to recall that there have always been times like these.
- Paul Harvey

Dear Saints and Aints.

Shalom.

My bedroom plays host to a brilliant flash of lightning and before I can scream in terror, a thunderclap matching in loudness the intensity of the light drowns out any coherent thought and any puny sound I could have produced. Then the rain starts! It's a deluge! The monsoon has arrived!

While many parts of India suffer from massive floods, Nagpur, not adjacent to any large body of water or near any large river is spared such mayhem. Our home, on a slight elevation, is in an even better position.

With the rains come the kids - though the two events are in no way related. It is just that the end of the summer marks the beginning of the new academic year. The Nagpur home, at the last count, has 650 boys; the girls' home has 375 girls and we support another 50 boys at another home. A total of 1075 kids! Those besides, we support some kids at Bible Colleges, Technical schools and colleges. The staff adds another 100 people. Then there are several pastors we also support. A total of 1200 souls look to us for support and help - directly. Then there are many others...

I believe the greatest gift that God bestows upon His people is the gift to believe He will provide and help. We have a monthly budget of about $25000 USD. That does not include our monthly debt repayments. The daily answers to our prayers make it possible to believe Him for those things we do not see: Eternal life; being children of God, a Heaven where awaits us what "eyes have not seen nor ears heard the things that God has prepared for them who love Him". Mockers may scoff at our claim to all the things the Bible promises those who love God and are loved by Him because they never experienced in their daily lives the answer to "Give us this day our daily bread." I have!

My trust in God results in a stream of young people coming to the home; they thank us for what we did for them. Some of them are in the ministry, some in business, some in computer jobs, some in Government service; many are even with law enforcement agencies and paramilitary forces. And often I hear, "We love you Bhaisahib." One young man sent me a sms with ten "thank you, thank!" and added, "You have helped me to become the cleverest among my friends". Now I trust God for their eternal soul!

"Humility is the embarrassment you feel when you tell people how wonderful you are."
- Laurence J. Peter

As an aside, one argument against me receiving Indian citizenship is that I might influence many for Christ or Christianity. I truly wish it was the case...

I must admit though, all this carries with it a price. I feel somewhat weary. I am not impervious to the problems, tensions and difficulties that beset us. Just because a man has been given some beautiful insights doesn?t mean his life consistently reflects those insights. Neither do we consistently live by our quotes never mind how inspiring they might be... The long hot summer; the struggle to get things ready for the kids and not having had a holiday for the past three years or even longer has taken its toll. I had hoped to go to Germany for a 2-3 weeks holiday in July but didn't manage it. The constant struggle with finances adds to it all. Yet how else can we prove God unless we go through all that? How else can we be truly a witness to His faithfulness? I often seem to make it sound so easy, but Saints, many times it isn't!

Yohan and Priya are doing well; though they have their ups and downs with their health but this cannot be helped. Bapu passed his M.A. in Psychology. That gives him his second M.A Now he needs to do something in the line of business administration.

On the building front... The second floor to our school building is completed. Now we need desks for four more class rooms. We hope to have completed the dining hall by the end of August. But it is beginning to look great. We are working on a host of minor things to improve the place. It is a never ending job. The rains stopped short our attempt to add the second floor to the girls' home. After the rains we will get busy with that. But the bathrooms and toilets for the girls? home are constructed. A big improvement which makes life easier for the girls! Malji, Yohan's brother and Yamuna his wife are doing a fine job at the girls' home. Their daughter Sonali has been appointed headmaster of the High School.

One good news is that now after two years in limbo I will have a proper five-year visa. At present it is held up in Mumbai (Bombay). The Central Government granted it and now the order just has to come to Nagpur. It should only be a matter of days...

With my visa secured, I am now planning a six months furlough to Canada starting January 2008. If need be I can extend that for a month or so. I want to make the best of my time while in Canada. Like during previous visits I want to drive across Canada as far north as the Yukon as far east as the Maritimes. No place will be too far for me and no church too small or poor! Should the Canadian Government grant him a visa I am thinking of bringing Bapu along for six weeks to two months.

For meetings, to avoid confusion, Please contact Dawn Steinke at the BC District office of the Pentecostal Assemblies of Canada. In the past she has done a terrific job coordinating my itinerary.

In closing let me thank you for your gifts of finances and prayers. Many no doubt consider me a pain. Yet if I a pain I be, it is because I am totally involved in the pain of others. I am trying to help! I am trying to offer hope to those who have none.

Thank you for making us your ambassadors of hope to these needy kids.

Frank, Yohan and Bapu.
